Relay for Life bringing awareness to cancer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (March 26, 2012) -- Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path.

Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Relayers do not have to walk all night, but each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.

THV's Tom Brannon spoke to American Cancer Society volunteer Elizabeth Fortune about her own personal battle with cancer and why she is participating in Relay for Life. Click on the video link!

New figures on child poverty in Arkansas show upward trend

New figures on child poverty in Arkansas show upward trend

Numbers will likely grow as economy continues slow recovery

LITTLE ROCK – New figures on child poverty compiled by Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families show a disturbing upward trend that is likely to continue as our economy slowly recovers. The child poverty rate in Arkansas now stands at 26.8 percent, a number that is significantly higher than the national average of 20.1 percent.

According to the report, the “2012 Arkansas Child Poverty Update,” the child poverty rate in Arkansas has grown by over two percent during the past ten years for which data is available. The economic well-being of our children is an important issue for obvious reasons, but child poverty has both short- and long-term impacts that are less apparent (i.e. it can create significant costs to our health and criminal justice systems and negatively impact the economy).
