A Place to Call Home: Jaylen and O'Brian

Imagine having no mom, no dad, or no real place to call home.  That is the sad reality for hundreds of Arkansas children.

But each month, through our partnership with the Arkansas Department of Human Services, we feature these children and make their voices heard.

This month, we meet two brothers, Jaylen and O'Brian (photo gallery), who don't need much...just a home with a whole lot of love.

10-year old Jaylen was the first to spot Chuck E. Cheese at the North Little Rock location, and he could not contain his excitement.

It was so much joy for a boy start in life has been anything but.  Jaylen and his 11-year old brother O'Brian have been in foster care, without a mom and a dad, for the past 7 years.

"I feel good coming here," says O'Brian.

Summer camp turning students into space engineers

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (March 22, 2012) - Middle school students (those currently in 5th - 7th grades) will be given the opportunity to meet an astronaut and become space engineers during a two-week summer science camp at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr., the first African American to walk in space, will offer more than 1,000 middle school students a chance to participate in interactive science and math camp programs at the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp July 9-20 at UALR.

Students will test and develop their engineering and science prowess during daily activities that emphasize development of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills.

Special tax credit available to first-time home buyers

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (March 22, 2012) - The Mortgage Credit Certificate program allows first-time home buyers to take advantage of a special federal income tax credit.

The amount of the credit is tied to a local formula that every city with an MCC program must follow. An MCC credit, which can total $2,000 or more, reduces the borrower's federal tax liability by an amount tied to how much one pays in annual mortgage interest.

Both the borrower's income and the purchase price of the home must fall within established guidelines

THV's Ashley Blackstone sat down with Murray Harding of the Arkansas Development Finance Authority (ADFA) to discuss how potential home buyers can go about qualifying for this tax credit. Click on the video link!

Here is a list of general requirements Harding says applicants should keep in mind:
