Historic gown collection to undergo conservation process; may be removed from public exhibit

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (OSHM) - The Old State House Museum’s First Ladies’ Gown collection, which contains over 120 years of inaugural gowns worn by Arkansas’s First Ladies, will temporarily close to the public on September 8, 2014, so the gowns can be assessed for conservation needs. The last day to see the collection before the assessment is September 7, 2014.

“The Arkansas First Ladies Gowns at the Old State House Museum are, through the years, our most popular artifacts,” said Bill Gatewood, director of the Old State House Museum. ”Our responsibility to preserve the gowns yet make them accessible to the public creates a very challenging situation.  The Museum staff's decision to begin conservation of the gowns exhibit must balance both considerations.”

My Town Hero: The Motivator

My Town Hero: The Motivator

JACKSONVILLE Ark. (KTHV) - Every now and then, we find ourselves stuck in a rut. One man in the city of Jacksonville has made it his duty to inspire just about everyone he encounters. It's one of many reasons he was nominated for My Town Hero.

When James Bolden is on the move, he's bound to light someone on fire with enthusiasm.

"He makes people feel motivated by his demeanor, his behavior, personality everything about him," said Jill Ross, Jacksonville human resource director. Internationally, he's known as The Motivator, but Ross also knows him as a city alderman. When employee morale was down, she knew exactly who to turn to. "He spent 15 hours of his own time training 300 city employees.”

She said Alderman Bolden spent an hour teaching them how to handle stress and stay motivated during tough economic times.

THV11 in Your Town feature: Batesville

THV11 in Your Town feature: Batesville

BATESVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) – I’m not going to lie. I think I chose Batesville for this trip just because I wanted to visit my old home again and see how much it has changed since I graduated from Lyon.

I could immediately see several changes as I drove in from Highway 167. Southside seems to have blossomed quickly into a busy area; Colton’s has moved to the old Bonanza site, my beloved Quizno’s/”secret” study place has shut down, and a Walgreen’s now sits where the old gas station and Baskin Robbins once stood. Things were even changing on campus and in the downtown area.

LYON COLLEGE

The biggest change at Lyon so far is the new Edwards Commons building. The original building was destroyed by fire in 2010, but a new 44,000 square-foot building has risen in its place, housing a campus store, mailboxes, a dining area and bistro, and the student life center.
