MAUMELLE, Ark. (KTHV) - A few Maumelle citizens are trying to help veterans in the area have the perfect Christmas.

A drive is underway to take Christmas gifts to the “forgotten vets” at Fort Roots Veterans Administration Hospital in North Little Rock. Almost 400 vets are hoping to be surprised with gifts this year, including a visit from Santa. The veterans at Ft. Roots suffer from PTSD, life threatening illnesses or injuries, addictions and homelessness.

“For many of the vets at Fort Roots, their only Christmas gift will be the ones we give them,” said Jacki Bruning of Maumelle, who had the idea six years ago.

According to Bruning, they are looking for donation items such as backpacks, socks, pajamas, coats, shirts, lap blankets, individual toiletries individual packaged snacks, candy, coffee and hand-held games,” said Bruning.

“We do ask that all the items be new. Each gift bag will also include a hand-written note thanking the vets for their service and the sacrifices they have made for our country,” Bruning said.
