Thea Paves the Way on September 14

To kickstart the 2013-2014 school year, the Thea Foundation’s eighth annual sidewalk chalk event Thea Paves the Way will be held Saturday, September 14, on, as tradition dictates, the front lawn of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library, a scenic backdrop for the creative energy that pervades the site.

Thea Paves the Way began in 2005 as one of the Thea Foundation’s first outreach events to engage students, teachers, families, community groups, and more in one of the most collaborative art mediums practiced in the classroom and beyond.  Today, the event draws 500+ participants to also enjoy deejayed music and outdoor recreation on the grounds.

Teachers who register their students as a school group have the chance to win one of two $250 gift certificates to art supplies distributor, Dick Blick Art Materials, through a drawing at the end of the event.

Eleven years’ worth of community outreach and arts philanthropy in its wake, the Thea Foundation has enjoyed the pleasure of meeting countless young and budding artists across the state of Arkansas.  Akeen McDaniel, 18, is one of those young, budding artists.  A first-time volunteer for Thea’s Visual Arts Scholarship Competition this past winter, McDaniel casually scrolled through a series of photos of his original origami works on his smart phone for bystanders during a break.  At the awed viewers‘ gasps, he commented, “No big deal.”  A relationship was instantly forged between the foundation and this aspiring “origamist.”  Thea is proud to debut an exhibition of McDaniel’s origami sculptures during the upcoming Argenta ArtWalk on Friday, August 16, 5 to 8pm.  Beer and wine bar will be available for patrons.
