UALR professor among 3 dead in murder-suicide, arson

MAUMELLE, Ark. (KTHV) - According to Capt. Jim Hansard with Maumelle police, firefighters were dispatched to structure fire on Auriel Circle just before 10 p.m. Friday.

Upon entering the residence, firefighters are said to have discovered the body of a female lying on the floor. They reportedly pulled her to the front porch where police officers moved her to the front yard. Capt. Hansard said they immediately observed that she had an apparent gunshot wound to her forehead.

Firefighters are said to have then discovered another adult female in a bedroom, also with a gunshot wound. She was also deceased, as well as an adult male dead in the living room.

Additionally, two dogs were reportedly found dead in the residence, both had been shot.

The gun, police believe is the murder weapon, was recovered in the home.

Capt. Hansard said the home was significantly damaged due to the fire.

The deceased are identified as UALR professor James Wilbanks, 41, Tatiana Wilbanks, 27 and Elizabeth Wilbanks, 31.

Maumelle police are investigating the case and initial findings indicate an apparent arson, murder/suicide.

UALR Dean of the College of Business Dr. Jane Wayland released this statement:

"We do not know the facts and circumstances of this tragic incident, and we are very saddened and shocked. We do know that Dr. Wilbanks was an accomplished researcher and professor of management. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends."
