UALR professor and family dead after shooting, fire

MAUMELLE, Ark. (KTHV)- An upscale community and an inner-city campus, both reeling after a professor, his wife and another woman all die in an apparent murder-suicide.

Doctor James Wilbanks, a business school professor at UALR is among three dead in Maumelle. The other two, his wife, Tatiana Wilbanks, and his sister Elizabeth Wilbanks.

Maumelle Police say firefighters and police responded to the home Friday night just before 10 p.m.

"Detectives will be looking for any that may have been around that we're unaware of at this point," said Captain Jim Hansard of the Maumelle Police Department. "We're looking into the family history and things of that nature."

Doctor Wilbanks was an assistant professor at UALR's Business School. Neighbors like Michelle Miller say the scene seemed like it came straight out of a movie. "We see it on TV, on TV shows, but that's not real right? because that's a TV show," said Miller.

She said she didn't talk to her 11-year-old son about these types of realities at such an early age. "This is something that happened, and it's real and he has to understand that that's real life."

Parker Miller had a friend visiting when the fire erupted. The Miller family did not know the Wilbanks. "No one even knows who they are on this street, and now they're dead."

Maumelle police have confirmed that they have the gun, and it was found inside the home. It's the one detail they're releasing that leads them to call this a double murder-suicide. Details left unanswered include who did it and what the motive was behind the event.
