Miss Arkansas Pageant offers free tickets to students

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. –  The Miss Arkansas Scholarship Pageant is proud to announce that there will be free tickets for students available at this year’s pageant.  On Wednesday and Thursday, July 13 and 14, Junior High and High School spirit squads are invited to attend the Preliminary competition free!    Spirit squad members must wear their uniform / team gear in order to receive complimentary admission. 

On Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16, fraternity and sorority members will be able to watch the final night of preliminary competition and the crowning night for free as well!  Greek members are asked to wear their letters or pin in order to gain complimentary admission. 

For both groups, there will be a table set up outside the Convention Center, on the Embassy Suites side near the box office.  Spirit Squad members and Greeks are asked to check in between 6:30 p.m.

ADHE awards nearly 10,500 Academic Challenge Scholarships to recent high school grads

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Today the Arkansas Department of Higher Education announced nearly 10,500 students from the high school class of 2011 have been awarded Academic Challenge Scholarships for the upcoming academic year and were notified via email. The number was increasing by the hour as applications were processed.

“We are pleased to award these students who have worked hard to prepare for continuing their education,” said Shane Broadway, interim director of ADHE, “and we encourage them to log into the ADHE website – the sooner the better – to accept the award.

Additional recent high school graduates who haven’t completed the YOUniversal Scholarship Application yet may still qualify. Current students who have not previously received the Academic Challenge Scholarship and returning students should also apply by June 1.

Scholarships available at Oxford American Writers' Summit

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Oxford American will offer five scholarships (including tuition, room, and board) for Arkansas college students to attend the inaugural Oxford American Summit for Ambitious Writers occurring June 21–26, 2011, at Winthrop Rockefeller Institute on Petit Jean Mountain.

"These scholarships will allow the most promising young writers at Arkansas colleges to learn from some of the best writers and editors in the nation," said Marc Smirnoff, editor of The Oxford American.  "We are pleased to be able to extend this opportunity to our home-state students."

The scholarships will be awarded to the five best student applications (as judged by the Summit’s Fiction and Creative Nonfiction admission boards) received from two- and four-year Arkansas colleges and universities.
